Apps that explain your Apple Watch sleep and HRV, compared
Your Apple Watch records sleep, HRV and resting heart rate every night. Plenty of apps will read it for you. Here's how seven of them differ, including ours.
We make Pajdo, so we're not neutral. We've tried to be fair anyway: every line about another app comes from that app's own website or App Store listing, and each one gets a reason to pick it.
They all read the same Apple Health data. The real differences are what they hand back (a score, a mood, a plan), whether you can ask them questions, and how much you get without paying.

Which one fits you
Pajdo, if you want the why
Pajdo turns your data into a mood instead of a score, and tapping him shows the readings behind it. You can ask him how your week went, answered on your iPhone. Pro adds workouts that ease off after a rough night and race plans. It's the newest app here, so it has the fewest ratings.
Athlytic, if you train by the numbers
Athlytic reads your overnight HRV and resting heart rate against your own baseline and gives you a recovery score and a target for how hard to go today. It had more than 11,000 US ratings when we checked.
Bevel, if you want everything in one dashboard
Bevel puts sleep, strain, stress and even food on one screen, with an AI coach on top. It also reads Garmin and Oura, which helps if your data comes from more than one device.
AutoSleep, if sleep is the whole story
AutoSleep goes deeper on sleep than anything else here, and you pay once with no subscription. It doesn't try to coach your workouts.
Training Today, if you want one answer each morning
Training Today gives you a single readiness score from your HRV and keeps it simple. With Premium, triathletes and runners get structured sessions that adapt to it.
Gentler Streak, if scores stress you out
Gentler Streak skips the big number and suggests anything from a rest day to a hard session, based on how ready you are. The developer says your data stays on your device and there are no user accounts.
Observa, if you like digging into patterns
Observa looks for what tends to go with your better and worse mornings and works it all out on your iPhone. It launched recently and had 2 US ratings when we checked.
Questions people ask
Which app explains Apple Watch HRV in plain words?
Pajdo and Athlytic both answer questions about your data, Pajdo with Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, Athlytic with Ask Athlytic. If you'd rather read than ask, Pajdo opens the chart behind each reason for his mood, and Observa shows which signals moved its score.
Which of these keep my health data on my iPhone?
With Pajdo, your health data never leaves your phone. Athlytic, AutoSleep, Gentler Streak and Observa each say on their own pages that they process your data on your device. Bevel doesn't say where its AI runs, so check its privacy policy.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
For sleep and HRV, yes. The watch records them overnight and the apps read them from the Apple Health app. Without one, most of these apps only have steps and workouts to go on.
Is any of this medical advice?
No. These are wellness apps. They compare your readings with your own usual and describe them. If a number worries you, or stays away from your usual for a while, talk to a doctor.
