Stand hours

How many hours today you stood up and moved for at least a minute, as counted by Apple Watch for your Stand ring.

Apple Watch marks an hour as a stand hour once you've stood and moved for at least one minute in it. The Stand ring's goal starts at 12 hours, and the watch can nudge you when you've been sitting a while. With the Wheelchair setting on, it counts hours with at least a minute of rolling instead, shown as the Roll ring.

It's a measure of breaking up long still stretches, not of exercise. The WHO recommends limiting time spent sitting or lying still and says swapping it for movement of any intensity, even light, brings health benefits. It also says the evidence isn't strong enough yet to name a number.

Pajdo reads the day's count from Apple Health.

Worth a try

Stand up and move each hour

WHO advises adults to limit time spent sitting, and says replacing it with activity of any intensity, light included, has health benefits. There isn't enough evidence yet for an exact break schedule.

That's where the Stand ring helps. Apple Watch counts an hour when you've stood and moved for at least a minute in it, which makes a handy nudge.

Try it: once an hour, stand up and do something small. Refill your water, take a call on your feet, or walk to a colleague instead of messaging.
