Walking and running distance

How far you walked and ran today, estimated by your iPhone and Apple Watch and saved in Apple Health.

Your iPhone and Apple Watch record walking and running distance automatically. Pajdo reads the day's total from Apple Health and shows it in the units your phone uses.

Outdoors, the watch can use GPS. When GPS is weak or missing, it leans on its motion sensor and the stride length it has learned. You can help it learn: walk or run outdoors in the Workout app for about 20 minutes at your usual pace. Every outdoor walk or run after that keeps teaching it your stride at different speeds, which improves distance, pace and energy estimates.

It's still an estimate, so treat it as a good guide rather than a measured course.

What tends to push it up

Worth a try

Let short walks add up

Activity guidelines used to count only bouts of 10 minutes or more. WHO dropped that rule in 2020, and the US guidelines now say any amount of physical activity has some health benefits.

WHO's message is simple: some activity is better than none, and all of it counts.

Try it: find three spots in your day for a few minutes on foot. Walk part of the way to work, take the stairs, or do a lap of the block after lunch. Your step count, from iPhone or Apple Watch, will quietly keep score.
